During weekends and holidays, thousands of Hong Kong residents and tourists flock to country parks for camping and hiking. Hong Kong is a densely populated city. Most country parks in Hong Kong are adjacent to busy roads, meaning that the soil may be polluted with heavy metals emitted from the traffic activities nearby. This can pose potential health risks to the park users especially children when visiting the parks, as well as ecological risks to the environment (i.e., biological, chemical or physical stress which can have an adverse response in the environment).\n\nThere are twenty-four designated country parks in Hong Kong. Dr Edith Ngai from the Department of Construction Technology and Engineering studied four country parks, namely Plover Cove Country Park, Sai Kung West Country Park, Lion Rock Country Park, and Kam Shan Country Park. These selected parks are near busy roads, and people who engage in recreational activities are most vulnerable to the effects of pollution, so it is necessary to study the potential health impact of soil pollution on these sites.\n\nBetween the wet (Apr to Oct) and dry (Nov to Mar) seasons from 2019 and 2021, 48 topsoil samples were collected from the four country parks. At each location, a stainless-steel soil sample probe was used to collect 0-10 cm of topsoil samples.\n\n<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-44690\" src=\"https:\/\/thei.edu.hk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Edith-1-300x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thei.edu.hk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Edith-1-300x400.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thei.edu.hk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Edith-1-9x12.jpg 9w, https:\/\/thei.edu.hk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Edith-1.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>\n\n<strong>\u4f7f\u7528\u571f\u58e4\u6837\u54c1\u63a2\u9488\u63a1\u96c6\u571f\u58e4\u6837\u672c<\/strong>\n\n\u8fd9\u4e9b\u571f\u58e4\u6837\u672c\u88ab\u9001\u5230\u9999\u6e2f\u8ba4\u53ef\u5316\u9a8c\u6240\u8fdb\u884c\u5206\u6790\u3002\u5229\u7528\u7535\u611f\u8026\u5408\u7b49\u79bb\u5b50\u4f53\u8d28\u8c31 (ICP-MS) \u6216\u7535\u611f\u8026\u5408\u7b49\u79bb\u5b50\u4f53\u539f\u5b50\u53d1\u5c04 (ICP-AES) \u6765\u68c0\u6d4b\u6837\u54c1\u4e2d\u662f\u5426\u542b\u7837\u3001\u94f6\u3001\u9549\u3001\u94ec\u3001\u94dc\u3001\u6c5e\u3001\u954d\u3001\u94c5\u548c\u950c\u7b49\u91cd\u91d1\u5c5e\u3002\u7814\u7a76\u56e2\u961f\u4f7f\u7528\u300c\u6c59\u67d3\u8d1f\u8377\u6307\u6570 (PLI)\u300d \u3001\u300c\u5e73\u5747\u6c59\u67d3\u6307\u6570 (PIave)\u300d \u3001\u300cNemerow\u6c59\u67d3\u6307\u6570 (PINemerow)\u300d \u7b49\u51e0\u4e2a\u6307\u6570\u6765\u8bc4\u4f30\u571f\u58e4\u6837\u672c\u7684\u6c59\u67d3\u7a0b\u5ea6\uff0c\u900f\u8fc7\u6bd4\u8f83\u8fd9\u4e9b\u6307\u6570\u6765\u8bc4\u4f30\u4e0d\u540c\u5730\u70b9\u7684\u6574\u4f53\u571f\u58e4\u8d28\u91cf\u3002\n\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-44692\" src=\"https:\/\/thei.edu.hk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Edith-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thei.edu.hk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Edith-2.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thei.edu.hk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Edith-2-16x12.jpg 16w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>\n\n<strong>\u571f\u58e4\u6837\u672c<\/strong>\n\n\u7ed3\u679c\u663e\u793a\u516c\u8def\u8fb9\u7684\u571f\u58e4\u8868\u9762\u56e0\u4ea4\u901a\u6d3b\u52a8\u800c\u53d7\u91cd\u91d1\u5c5e\u6c59\u67d3\uff0c\u91cd\u91d1\u5c5e\u6d53\u5ea6\u5e76\u968f\u7740\u4ea4\u901a\u91cf\u800c\u589e\u52a0\u3002\u5176\u4e2d\u91d1\u5c71\u90ca\u91ce\u516c\u56ed\u7684\u94ec\u3001\u94dc\u3001\u94c5\u548c\u950c\u6d53\u5ea6\u6700\u9ad8\uff0c \u6bd4\u5176\u4ed6\u4e09\u4e2a\u516c\u56ed\u7684\u5e73\u5747\u6d53\u5ea6\u9ad8\u51fa 7.8 \u500d\u3002 \u800c PIave \u548c PINemerow \u6307\u6570\u663e\u793a\uff0c\u91d1\u5c71\u90ca\u91ce\u516c\u56ed\u7684\u571f\u58e4\u6c59\u67d3\u7a0b\u5ea6\u6307\u6570\u5728\u56db\u4e2a\u90ca\u91ce\u516c\u56ed\u4e2d\u4ea6\u6392\u884c\u6700\u9ad8 (\u89c1\u8868\u4e00) \u3002\u5728\u571f\u58e4\u72b6\u51b5\u65b9\u9762\uff0c\u6c59\u67d3\u8d1f\u8377\u6307\u6570\uff08PLI\uff09\u663e\u793a\u9664\u4e86\u8239\u6e7e\u90ca\u91ce\u516c\u56ed\u5916\uff0c\u5176\u9980\u7684\u4e09\u4e2a\u90ca\u91ce\u516c\u56ed\u7684\u571f\u58e4\u72b6\u51b5\u90fd\u968f\u7740\u65f6\u95f4\u7684\u63a8\u79fb\u800c\u6076\u5316\uff0c\u800c\u5bfc\u81f4\u6076\u5316\u7684\u539f\u56e0\u5c31\u662f\u4ea4\u901a\u91cf\u589e\u52a0\u3002\n<table border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"1\" cellpadding=\"1\" align=\"centre\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><\/td>\n<td><strong>PLI<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><strong>PIave<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><strong>PI(Nemerow)<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><strong>RI<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>\u8239\u6e7e\u90ca\u91ce\u516c\u56ed<\/strong><\/td>\n<td>0.99<\/td>\n<td>1.08<\/td>\n<td>1.81<\/td>\n<td>70.78<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>\u897f\u8d21\u897f\u90ca\u91ce\u516c\u56ed<\/strong><\/td>\n<td>2.84<\/td>\n<td>1.22<\/td>\n<td>1.47<\/td>\n<td>67.35<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>\u72ee\u5b50\u5c71\u90ca\u91ce\u516c\u56ed<\/strong><\/td>\n<td>4.11<\/td>\n<td>1.34<\/td>\n<td>1.96<\/td>\n<td>98.84<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>\u91d1\u5c71\u90ca\u91ce\u516c\u56ed<\/strong><\/td>\n<td>813<\/td>\n<td>3.95<\/td>\n<td>8.60<\/td>\n<td>192.08<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<strong>\u8868\u4e00. \u9999\u6e2f\u56db\u4e2a\u90ca\u91ce\u516c\u56ed\u7684\u7efc\u5408\u6c59\u67d3\u6307\u6570\u6982\u8981 <\/strong><strong>in Hong Kong<\/strong>\n\nOverall, the results suggest that the ecological risks in all the parks were acceptable, ranging from low to moderate. Dr Ngai outlines that developing better urban planning can avoid high ecological risks, and to reduce heavy metal pollution in country parks, increasing the height of roadside green plants is a solution.\n\nFrom this study, it is clear that traffic-induced pollution is present on the soil surface of Hong Kong\u2019s country parks. At present, there are no regulatory guidelines and benchmarks for assessing metal pollution in the soils in Hong Kong. Existing guidelines in the industry only focus on the impact of heavy metal pollution from industrial facilities without acknowledging pollution from traffic activities. With many high-polluting industries gradually leaving Hong Kong, vehicular emissions will become the main source of environmental pollution.
