On 24 March 2018, 25 students from THEi and IVE (Tuen Mun) went to a GeoPark Tour organized by the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering (CSCE) THEi Student Chapter and led by Dr. Gordon Leung, Faulty Advisor of CSCE THEi Student Chapter and Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering Programme, THEi.

At Ap Chau Geosite, an outlying island in the north-eastern New Territories, the students had the chance to take a close look at the extraordinary red breccia which is rare in Hong Kong. They could also appreciate a diverse range of striking wave erosion landforms at close range, such as a sea cliff, wave-cut platform, wave-cut notch, sea arch and sea stack, and particularly the famous ‘Duck’s Eye’ of Ap Chau. Ap Chau once had a thriving fishing community but only a few villagers continue to live on the island today.

In addition to earth science, the tour also allowed students to explore the ecology and cultural heritage of the region. The Lai Chi Wo Nature Trail encircles the traditional Hakka village of Lai Chi Wo set along the Lai Chi Wo coast, and through Lai Chi Wo Village and its fung shui woodland. Some sections are built with boardwalks, and feature interpretation signs that present the local wildlife and history.
