NANOMY

Nano-Nutrient Water Dispenser

In the near future, nanotechnology is set to revolutionize scientific research and transform health and wellness. By manipulating materials at the nanoscale—typically between 1 to 100 nanometers—scientists are uncovering unique properties that enable groundbreaking applications across various fields. This technology is particularly crucial for enhancing water quality and promoting individual health by infusing water with nanoscale nutrients. As nanotechnology gains traction, individuals will be empowered to customize their hydration by adding essential nanoscale vitamins, minerals, and beneficial additives, turning simple hydration into a proactive health strategy. However, the widespread use of engineered nanoparticles presents significant challenges, including risks posed by their introduction into water treatment systems, environmental accumulation, and unforeseen interactions with biological systems. The Personalized Hydration Dispenser, NANOMY, addresses these challenges by enabling users to tailor their hydration experience with nanoscale nutrients while incorporating controls to prevent overconsumption and minimize environmental impact. With nano water supplied exclusively by the government, buildings equipped with NANOMY dispensers will require systems to manage usage for each household, ensuring quality and safety. The direct piping system facilitates efficient hydration management, making NANOMY a sustainable and forward-thinking solution for personalized hydration in the future.

TOM-MR

In a future where most human food is 3D-printed to prioritize sustainability, and soft, easily consumable meals dominate due to a growing preference for minimal chewing, a new challenge emerges: jaw muscle atrophy from a lack of use. Enter TOM-MR, a robot designed 50 years into the future to stimulate jaw muscles and prevent the health issues associated with reduced chewing activity. TOM-MR provides a personalized regimen of jaw exercises, helping users maintain muscle strength, oral health, and facial structure in a world accustomed to ultra-soft diets. This innovative concept is part of the DPD5334 Emerging Technology and Trends module, where students are encouraged to project into the distant future and anticipate potential challenges that could arise from evolving societal habits and technological trends. By imagining conceptual extensions of today’s realities, students explore how future technologies might address emerging user needs while emphasizing the critical role of product designers in shaping a sustainable and healthy future. TOM-MR exemplifies this forward-thinking approach, offering a solution to a problem that may seem distant but is rooted in current trends and behaviors.

Sustainable Lighting Design 2021

In this project students are taught sustainable product design using the Cradle-to-Cradle concept which is a biomimetic method to the design of products and systems. It models human industry on nature’s processes where materials are considered as nutrients circulating in healthy, safe metabolisms. Students are tasked to design and fabricate a sustainable lighting design incorporating the concept taught in the module. The project was done in collaboration with the Hong Kong Printing and Publishing Media Industry Workers Union who provided to students some of the sustainable materials used to make the design and access for further extending their knowledge about green technology.

Merus Menstruation Kit

Around the world, there are 200,000 tonnes of menstrual waste produced per year. Problems with current menstruation products include difficult insertion, inconvenient disinfection, and inconvenience when it comes to menstrual tracking. This design aims to give a sense of intimacy & cleanliness to menstruation products, provide a portable & convenient method of disinfection and simplify and aid product insertion for beginners. By promoting green menstrual management, an app not only allows online purchase and reorder of consumable items, but it also helps manage and track menstruation cycles.
