Professor António Figueiredo is an Associate Professor with Habilitation at the Faculty of Sport Sciences and Physical Education, University of Coimbra, Portugal.

Throughout his academic career, he has spent extended periods abroad, working with and establishing collaborations with internationally recognised researchers. He completed a dual-degree Master’s programme at the University of Coimbra, Portugal, and the University of Northern Iowa, USA, and holds a PhD in Sport Sciences, with a specialisation in Sports Training.

His main research interests focus on youth training, talent identification, and talent development, with particular emphasis on football. His research also explores the relationship between biological and behavioural variables and their influence on youth athletic performance, as well as the long-term impact of these factors and sporting experiences across the lifespan.

The international recognition of his expertise is reflected in his participation as an invited speaker at numerous international conferences and in his publication record, which includes more than 140 articles, as author or co-author, in peer-reviewed international journals. He has also contributed to numerous books and book chapters and has edited four books published by well-established academic publishers.

Over the past decade, he has also been actively involved in research and initiatives related to dual careers in sport, serving on the Executive Committee of the European Athlete-Student – Dual Career Network. Throughout his academic career, he has supervised more than 80 master’s students and 15 PhD students.

In terms of university leadership and management, Professor Figueiredo served as Vice-Rector of the University of Coimbra from 2019 to 2023 and as Dean of the Faculty of Sport Sciences and Physical Education from 2011 to 2019.
