Before joining THEi in 2012, Prof. Chen has served as founding Head of the Division of Landscape Architecture and Director / co-founder of MLA programme and Deputy Head of Department of Architecture at the Faculty of Architecture, The University of Hong Kong (HKU). He did his undergraduate and graduate studies at Cornell University and practiced in the US for several years before returning to his hometown to join HKU. He has extensive administrative, academic, professional, and community service experience. Prof. Chen’s main research interests relate to the broad discipline of landscape architecture, including theory of contemporary planning and design, education, policy, technology, and how different design disciplines can inform each other to achieve more creative and technologically advanced design solutions. In association with his research interests, he has been supervisor of several PHD and MPhil graduates. He believes in multidisciplinary design approaches and cross sector lateral thinking in all design related fields. Prof. Chen has also been appointed Honorary Professor at the University of Hong Kong and Honorary Professor at HKUSPACE.

 

Prof. Chen is immediate Past Chairman of the Landscape Architects Registration Board (LARB); he has also been president of the Hong Kong Institute of Landscape Architects (HKILA) for five terms. He actively participates in community services and has served as member of many government advisory committees and professional bodies, such as the Town Planning Board (TPB), Antiquities Advisory Board (AAB), Harbourfront Commission (formerly HEC), Lands and Buildings Advisory Committee (LBAC), Trade Development Council (TDC), West Kowloon Cultural District Authority (WKCDA), Greening Master plan Committee (GMP), Community Involvement in Greening (CICG), Board of Directors of the Professional Green Building Council (PGBC), HK-BEAM, the Architecture Centre, Vice-Secretary General of The Hong Kong Federation of Design Associations Ltd.(FHKDA), Board of Directors of the Hong Kong Design Centre (HKDC) etc.
