1.            Competition Aim
Digital technologies are changing the operating model and development of the construction and building services industry in all aspects, and Building Information Modelling (BIM) is one of the emerging technologies in the industry. BIM plays different roles at each stage of the building asset life cycle, such as improving efficiency and flexibility in the planning and design stages, improving productivity and safety in the construction and operation stages, and helping to improve indoor environmental quality and building sustainability.

The Department of Construction, Environment and Engineering (DCEE) of THEi continues to organise the BIM competition for secondary school students this year. This competition encourages students to inject innovative, interesting, and feasible energy-saving and carbon-reducing ideas into existing buildings in Hong Kong. Participants would have the chance to experience BIM technology in fun and practical ways, which would broaden their horizons in terms of future study and career development.

2.            Competition Theme
This year's competition focuses on Hong Kong's characteristic building with great historical value - Tong Lau (
唐樓, tenement buildings). After World War II, Tong Lau spread across many districts in Kowloon, Hong Kong, providing living space for many Hong Kong residents and contributing to Hong Kong's rapid post-war development. However, the construction specifications and building equipment of existing Tong Lau are relatively backward, and many buildings lack systematic maintenance and management, resulting in the deterioration of the living environment. Students are encouraged to propose improvements for Tong Lau to enhance the building's energy efficiency and indoor environment.

3.            Competition Flow
In the first phase of the competition, participants need to propose carbon reduction and energy-saving solutions for a selected Tong Lau and submit a pre-recorded briefing video.

In the second phase of the competition, participants must use BIM technology to visualise the energy-saving and carbon-reduction ideas proposed in the first phase and make an in-person oral report to the judges of the competition.

4.            Important dates
