Mr. Terry Kwan, Director of Human Resources of FSE Lifestyle Services Limited, shared the successful experience of his company in offering WIL placement to THEi students in the WIL Day.
FSE Engineering Group Limited, one of the major groups of companies of FSE Lifestyle Services Limited, has offered numerous WIL placement opportunities to the students of THEi’s Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Building Services Engineering (BSE) throughout the years. Mr. Kwan shared their excellent strategy of offering a “total experience” for intern students to prepare their road to professional career.
Mr. Kwan explained that the provision of “total experience” began with organising different pre-employment activities with THEi, such as interactive interviews and career fairs. During the WIL placement (i.e. internship), they arranged for intern students to go to a specific project site for them to experience and learn site management skills. “We assign some young senior engineers to work with and support the students.” he said. Besides on-site project management experience, they also provided soft skills training and arranged students to visit different sites under the lead of professional engineers. To extend the inspiring and transformative learning journey of students, they would discuss with the THEi’s programme teaching staff to propose projects for the Final Year Project (FYP) of Year 4 students and serve as a mentor. Furthermore, the students would be invited to join a Career Learning Programme organised by them. The students would work in a part-time mode and could continue to participate in the project that they worked on during their WIL placement.
The representative of FSE Engineering Group Limited delivered a Career Talk to THEi students.
Mr. Kwan highly recongised the benefits of hosting THEi’s WIL students. “Our colleagues were very impressed with the THEi’s intern students.” he said. He further pointed out that they had a high success rate of recruiting THEi’s intern students as their permanent staff, and their staff who served as the “Buddies” of the intern students also improved a lot in their supervisory skills through guiding students.
Meanwhile, students conducting WIL placement at FSE Engineering Group Limited also had very positive feedback on the experience:
“I have the chance to work on real-life projects and assist experienced professionals in the field. This hands-on experience allows me to apply my knowledge and skills to practical situations, gaining valuable insights into the challenges and intricacies of pipe system servicing. Working closely with a team and alongside experienced professionals also provided me an opportunity to develop effective communication and collaboration skills.” - CHAN Pak Hin
“The WIL placement allowed me to acquire skills in handling various project-related documents, familiarise myself with drawings, standards, and materials pertaining to water supply and drainage systems, gain knowledge in the calculation and statistics of different engineering materials, and learn techniques in AutoCAD drawings and conducting on-site progress monitoring. I also developed important soft skills that are valuable in a professional setting.” – WONG Man Hei
“I participated in the entire process of water and building inspections, which provided me with a comprehensive understanding of the entire project process. I believe that this experience will greatly benefit my future development in the field of water engineering.” - SHUM Kwun Hong
“During this three-month internship, I have accumulated valuable experience across various domains, including electrical, plumbing, and air conditioning engineering, enhancing my experience and expertise and continuously improving multi-domain skills.” - UY Man Ching
Students conducting WIL placement at the FSE Engineering Group Limited had a very positive learning experience.
The comprehensive approach of the FSE Engineering Group Limited for nurturing the intern students through close collaboration with THEi, which ensures students receive steadfast mentorship and are exposed to different experiences as well as develops students beyond the WIL placement period, serves as a great exemplar of how to unlock the immense potential and value of WIL. |

“This position has enhanced my customer service and communication skills and allowed me to learn more about the working environment of hotels in Hong Kong. And I have shown that I am a valuable asset to the team through my performance. This is undoubtedly beneficial for my future career development.” |
“Observe carefully, humbly ask colleagues for advice and serve customers politely.” This is the motto that CAI Pei En, Richard came up with for himself when he was preparing for his WIL journey in W Hotel, where he served as a Food and Beverage Trainee in the summer of 2023.

WIL Story: CHEUNG Ka Yui (Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Horticulture, Arboriculture and Landscape Management) |

“The firsthand experience obtained from the WIL placement provides me with practical insights that enrich my classroom learning. My goal is to fully link theoretical knowledge with the practical know-how acquired through hands-on experience.” |
“I did not have much passion for turfgrass maintenance in the past as I think that it is a simple work. However, I found that turfgrass maintenance is much more challenging and interesting than I thought during my WIL placement.” CHEUNG Ka Yui (John) participated in WIL placement at the Hong Kong Jockey Club in the summer of 2023 and he shared that the placement experience had given him a new perspective towards the specialisation. “There are many different types of grasses, and carpet grass is less likely to be planted for sports use as it is more slippery and has a lower cushion power. The climate also affects the performance of the grasses. The compaction level, soil drainage, and irrigation pattern are all important.”
The main job duties of John included turf repairing, soil testing, and soil establishment. He was also arranged to observe the daily operations of the tree team and hence get a wider exposure to different work types of the industry.
John was very grateful that many people from the hosting organisation of WIL placement spent their time sharing their knowledge and experiences. “I truly appreciate the opportunity of undertaking the WIL placement at the Hong Kong Jockey Club. I am sure that these experiences will contribute to my personal growth and enhance my performance in my future career.”
