The seminar-cum-workshop “Native Ornamental Plants Utilization in Urban Landscape” was held on 30 July and 1 Aug 2020 in form of webinar. It was the second of “Knowledge Exchange Programme for Enhancing Urban Horticulture Industry: Expediting Technologies and Sustainability Mindset Series”. It is hoped that the series can help exchange urban horticulture technology between overseas and local professionals, advocate current urban horticultural practice with sustainable measures, and explore Hong Kong urban horticulture market in term of international level. There were more than 200 participants attended our webinar in each session, including professionals and practitioners from the industry, students and people from academia, also overseas attendees.

In session 1, there were three overseas speakers. Prof. Richard HAUER from University of Wisconsin, Steven Points, US was our first speaker. He shared some important considerations for introducing wild native species into urban areas. Second speaker was Prof. TANG Guangda from South China Agricultural University. He showed his research findings in Fengshui forests of South China Region and suggested some potential candidates for urban greening in the regions. Mr. John PARKER from Arboricultural Association, UK, our last speaker of session 1, demonstrated some approaches of urban tree management with case studies. We have invited two local speakers in session 2. Mr. Craig WILLIAMS from Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden gave a very informative talk on native species in Hong Kong, and highlighted some native species that can be more widely utilized. Ms. Jean CHAN, representative from Highways Department, introduced the “Enhancement Programme of Vegetated Slopes” that was initiated a few year ago and illustrated how native species is involved in the planting scheme.
