Technical Seminar - Development of Environmental Friendly Pavement Materials and Systems

Forums, Workshops & Seminars

On 3rd April 2018, the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT) of the UK, Hong Kong Region and the Faculty of Science and Technology jointly organized a technical seminar which looks into the development of environmentally friendly pavement materials in Hong Kong. The seminar was given by Ir Dr. Gordon Leung, Assistant Professor and Ir Dr. Simon Wong, Associate Professor of Civil Engineering Programme.

According to recent research findings, it is believed common types of waste, such as tyre rubber, reclaimed asphalt, plastic and waste sludge, can be recycled and utilized in a higher degree for road construction. Alternative pavement system will also help to offer more sustainable solutions by reducing the usage of traditional pavement materials. During the seminar, the mechanical performances and the future potential usages of Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) and Eco-friendly concrete pavement blocks using waste sludge were discussed.
