This research aims to explore the application of generative AI animation techniques in the Hong Kong Comic Industry, with the objective of developing a user-friendly and efficient pipeline. By leveraging the power of artificial intelligence, the study seeks to investigate how generative models can enhance the animation creation process, storytelling, and the visual aesthetics of comic art. This approach aspires to revolutionize the industry by pushing the boundaries of artistic expression.  

Generative AI tool MidJourney was launched 2 years ago, and more tools have been developed. Since there are many options available, the industry is yet to establish a professional standard AI animation pipeline, which presents an opportunity to further investigate the integration of generative AI techniques. The exploration of these procedures can fill the gap and potentially lead to innovative approaches that improve the industry’s creative output and productivity. 

Hong Kong’s animation industry has traditionally emphasized short-form animated content, with limited presence in feature-length animated movies or television series. To revitalize the industry, it is crucial to undertake a transformative approach that emphasizes smaller-scale production and efficiency. In this context, integrating generative AI animation techniques assume significance as it presents an alternative to develop ambitious animated projects. 

Comic industry has experienced a decline in popularity since the millennium. Exploring generative AI animation can act as a catalyst for revitalization by introducing innovative storytelling techniques, elevating visual aesthetics, and attracting new readership. By infusing AI-driven creativity into comic production, the industry can re-establish its relevance in the digital age and potentially expand its audience base both locally and internationally. 

By bridging the gap between technology and artistic expression, this research project can foster collaborations among comic artists, animators, and technologists.
