Through my student journey I realised that Landscape Architecture is all around us.

The BA (Hons) in Landscape Architecture made me realise the beauty and complexity of landscape architecture. In every design studio, I enjoyed field studies with experts including landscape architects, urban planners, ecologists, and others, who helped me to understand site and context at all scales.  Through the course I interned in LWK & Partners, working on real commercial landscape design projects. Upon graduation, I pursued a Master of Landscape Architecture in the University of Hong Kong. Through my student journey I realised that Landscape Architecture is all around us.

The joyful study of product design has enriched my life. Going from imagining to successfully making my own design is an interesting and rewarding experience. Cooperative projects with the industry, such as HKSTP and Lidl broadened my thinking.

Unlike traditional classroom learning, our design needs to meet the requirements of real customers by considering all aspects, such as mechanism, technology and production.

Prototyping is an important learning process. The well-equipped workshop also enhances our design ability, such as 3d printers, lathe, CNC machines and laser cut machines, etc., we can make our own creations or handicrafts by ourselves.

Moreover, all teachers are kind and trustworthy. The teacher-student relationship is like a friend. They give useful advice to us no matter the study or employment. During the internships and competitions, we can meet more industry professionals and broaden our vision.

Diversified internship opportunities enhanced my competitiveness.

My internship in a theme park enhanced my design skills through working on costume design. I also received internship training in a big fashion label and learned about management and operations of the fashion business. Upon graduation, I was hired as management trainee in the same company, developing my career in fashion management.

Scholarships open up exchange opportunity to London.

I was honoured to receive THEi’s ‘Entrance Scholarship’ and the Government’s ‘Outstanding Performance Scholarship, which sponsored my exchange to London. The personal style of British designers, as well as their notable design concepts, have broadened my horizons. I also learned graphic printing and embroidery skills, which have added more stings to my creative bow.

The Surveying programme of THEi provided me with comprehensive learning experiences. Talks from the industry and site visits were frequently organised whilst studio projects encouraged us to discover and learn more beyond regular teaching. We were motivated and given opportunities to learn new technologies such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). I had the opportunities to work as an intern both in a government department and a private firm. The programme provided excellent industry exposure to students and better equipped ourselves for our professional career in the future.

TSE Chi Yin

Student(s), Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Product Design, THEi

Studying Product Design at THEi was a big challenge for me. When I first arrived, I had no knowledge of hand-drawn and electro-drawn products. Luckily, with the teachers' explanations in class, their answers to our questions, and practice with classmates, my understanding of product design deepened significantly.

We had many opportunities to connect with different design companies and industry professionals, helping us understand current market demands. The school also regularly shared information about internal and external design competitions, providing a platform for students to showcase their talents.

To relieve stress, THEi organized arts and crafts activities, allowing students to relax physically and mentally before exams. At THEi, students not only learn from books but also apply their knowledge in real life, balancing their studies with their personal lives.

HO See Long Jessica

Student(s), Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Product Design, THEi

I chose the Product Design programme as my principal study, as I can enjoy the satisfaction of creating products. Apart from technical skills for design, I can gain lots of practical advice for my creation and future career path from my teachers. With different modules in the course, I can reach and design different kinds of products including IoT products, daily necessaries, watch and jewellery, toy, furniture and even sex toys. I have joined the global design programme to study in a short term at Swinburne University in Melbourne in which I can study industrial design. Throughout the four years, I actively participated in the different design competitions and events including BODW and Remix programme which would enrich my portfolio. Those experiences helped me to clarify my career path and future targets and built connection networks with talents from different professionals. Besides, I worked for a start-up in HKSTP to cooperate with engineers to produce mobility products. All in all, I am grateful to meet all my teachers, designers and classmates, as they create a wonderful learning environment and experience for me within these four years.

LAI Cheuk Yan

Student(s), Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Product Design, THEi

It has been a memorable and meaningful experience studying Product Design in THEi. Throughout these 4 years, I have been able to acquire the fundamental skills and knowledge of designing products strategically by putting theory into practice. Lessons taught from visual design such as color theory, layout, and aestheticism to user experience design including discovering user pain points, understanding consumer behaviors, and prototyping, have enabled me to manage my own design project when solving real-life problems. While creativity and uniqueness are important, idea generation to meet market demands and excellent visuals for user needs are also essential to a successful product design. What's more, studying product Design at THEi has granted me lots of valuable working experiences with the industry through school projects. In short, I would also like to express my deep gratitude to all my supportive fellows, dedicated tutors, and staff of product design who always devote their time and attention to providing me assistance and guidance.

CHOW Hong Man Leo

Student(s), Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Product Design, THEi

In the 4 years of THEi studies, I have grown into a designer who can create my own dreams.

Teachers encouraged us to explore ideas, practices, and professional skills crucial for our future careers. They showed us love and enthusiasm for design. Classmates worked together, brainstorming new ideas to leave the world better than we found it.

From an idea to sketching, 3D modeling to prototype, we put time, spirit, and part of our soul into it. THEi supported us with fine resources, fast computers, spacious facilities, a room full of DLP 3D printers, and an extensive library.

It enhanced the scope and scale of my creative mindset.
