To help our students gain a better understanding to the long term strategy of Hong Kong on the alleviation of traffic congestion and the construction of large scale civil works under various constraints, the Canadian Society of Civil Engineering THEi Student Chapter organized a site visit to The Central - Wan Chai Bypass and Island Eastern Corridor Link (中環灣仔繞道和東區走廊連接路) on 7th April 2018.
Led by Dr. Gordon Leung, Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering Programme and Faculty Advisor of the Student Chapter, a group of 25 engineering students had paid visit to the construction site. The Central - Wan Chai Bypass and Island Eastern Corridor Link is a strategic road along the north shore of Hong Kong Island targeted to alleviate traffic congestion along the existing Gloucester Road - Harcourt Road - Connaught Road Central corridor. It involves the construction of a 4.5 km long dual 3-lane trunk road with a 3.7 km long tunnel, linking up the Rumsey Street Flyover in Central and the Island Eastern Corridor (IEC) at North Point and the construction of approach roads to the proposed road tunnel portals in Central, Wan Chai and Causeway Bay. It is targeted to be completed in Year 2019.
