Objectives of General Education Programme
 

THEi aims to produce graduates who are not only experts in their specialist professions but flexible with broadly applicable transferrable skills. The General Education (GE) curriculum helps to promote this by having the following major objectives:

 

  • To introduce students to the broad perspectives of the Humanities, Sciences, and Social Sciences and their relationship to contemporary issues and the problems and challenges faced by professional practitioners
  • To cultivate broadly applicable transferrable skills, competencies and values that will contribute to professional success, lifelong learning and whole-person development.

GE Programme Intended Learning Outcomes

 

Students who complete the GE Programme will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a capacity for critical thinking, self-reflection, and analysis;
  • Recognise ethically, socially and globally responsible action;
  • Engage in self-directed learning;
  • Demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills;
  • Engage in creative problem-solving;
  • Demonstrate interpersonal skills associated with leadership and teamwork; and
  • Apply the broad principles of the Humanities, Sciences, and Social Sciences to practical problems and contemporary issues.

GE Curriculum

The GE curriculum consists of two parts, core modules and elective modules. In the core part, we adopt a Common Core Curriculum Approach which provides a single, integrated educational experience for all students, with modules that have been specifically created and students taking the same modules in a required sequence.

Within the GE Curriculum are the English and Chinese Language modules to improve students’ spoken and written communication skills, and three GE modules whose broad perspectives will be used to examine issues important to society.

 

 

Beyond the common core curriculum, students can select elective modules from areas outside their programmes that interest them. This will further broaden their horizons and contribute to the aim of the GE Programme.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

(For students who join THEi via Year-1 Entry in AY2019/20 and thereafter.)

Principles of offering General Education Elective (GEE) modules

 

(For students who joined THEi via Year-1 Entry in AY 2018/19 or earlier AND Year-3/Part-time Entry in AY 2020/21 or earlier)

 

  1. Students are only allowed to take GEE modules that are outside the realm of their programmes as the goal is to broaden their perspectives and knowledge base.  The corollary is that students will not be allowed to take a GEE module in the realm of their programmes, even if the module is offered by other Departments or the School of General Education and Languages.

 

  1. Students joining 4-year full-time programmes have to take at least two GEE modules from two different Departments other than their own / School of General Education and Languages.

 

  1. Students exiting with a Higher Diploma have to take one GEE module from a Department other than their own / School of General Education and Languages. 

 

  1. Year 3 entrants are required to take at least one GEE module from a Department other than their own / School of General Education and Languages. 

 

  1. Part-time students sharing the same entry requirement with Year-3 entrants are required to take at least one GEE module from a Department other than their own / the School of General Education and Languages.

 

  1. The arrangement for students of Multimedia Technology and Innovation, Information and Communications Technology and Surveying who take GEE5305 The Art & Science of Film, GEE5308 Web Technology & E-commerce and GEE5309 Housing Policy & Management are as follows: (a) For students who joined THEi in AY 2018/19, AY 2019/20 and AY 2020/21, these three GEE modules will be counted as delivered by DDA/DDIT; (b) For students who joined THEi in AY 2017/18 or earlier, these modules will be counted as delivered by DCEE.

 

(For Year 1 students who join THEi in AY 2019/20 and thereafter )

  

The GE curriculum of THEi has been revised for all Year 1 students who join THEi in AY 2019/20 and thereafter.  Under the new GEE curriculum, all GEE modules are categorised under six themes, namely:

 

      1. Language & Communication
      2. Arts, Cultures & World Views
      3. Social Analysis
      4. Sustainability, Development & Sciences
      5. Health & Wellness
      6. Innovation, Management & Entrepreneurship

 

 

To fulfil the graduation requirements of the GEE modules, students are required to select GEE modules from at least two themes out of the six themes.  Please refer to Attachment 8 - Themes for GEE Modules for more details.

 

(Applicable to ALL students)

 

  1. Students who have exempted from GEC4101 Chinese 1 and GEC5102 Chinese 2 are required to take two extra GEE modules to fulfil the graduation requirement. 

 

  1. Students of Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Surveying are allowed to take GEE5103 Living with Sustainable Materials to fulfil the graduation requirement with effect from Semester One, AY 2018/19. 

 

  1. Year 3 and Year 4 students of Recreation Management/Sports Management specialisation of Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours) in Sports and Recreation Management Programme are not allowed to take GEE5106 Tree Safety Inspection & Climbing, GEE5208 Accounting for Non-Accountants and GEE5210 Essentials in People Management to fulfil the graduation requirements.  These three GEE modules will not be counted for fulfilling graduation requirement for students of Recreation Management/Sports Management specialisation even they took the module(s) in their Year 1 and/or Year 2 study.  This requirement also takes effect retrospectively to the cohorts of AY 2012/13 to AY 2015/16.

 

  1. Students are allowed to either take GEE5305 The Art & Science of Film or GEE5416 Beyond Hollywood: Introduction to World Cinema but not both modules to fulfil the graduation requirement.  GEE5416 Beyond Hollywood: Introduction to World Cinema was phased out since Semester Two, AY 2018/19.

 

  1. Students of Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Professional Accounting are not allowed to take GEE5308 Web Technology & E-Commerce to fulfil the graduation requirement with effect from the Year-1 and Year-3 entry cohorts of AY 2018/19.  The students other than the above cohorts are allowed to take this module.

 

  1. Students of Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Health Care Programme are allowed to take GEE5203 Corporate Social Responsibility in Action to fulfil the graduation requirement with effect from Semester One, AY 2016/17.

 

  1. Students of Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Public Relations and Management/Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Public Relations and International Events Management who take MCC5211 Human Resources Management as programme elective are not allowed to take GEE5210 Essentials in People Management to fulfil the graduation requirement.  This requirement also takes effect retrospectively to the cohorts of AY 2012/13 to AY 2015/16.

 

  1. Students are allowed to either take GEE5304 Nutrition & Health or GEE5307 Food in Daily Life but not both modules to fulfil the graduation requirement.

 

  1. GEE5405 offered by SGEL has been renamed from “Modern Europe: History & Culture” to “The Modern World: History & Culture” with effect from Semester One, AY 2018/19.  Students who had taken the module "Modern Europe: History & Culture" before Semester One, AY 2018/19 are not allowed to take the module "The Modern World: History & Culture" to fulfil the graduation requirement.

 

  1. GEE5415 offered by SGEL has been renamed from “Cantonese in Hong Kong Popular Culture” to “Cantonese Linguistics in Hong Kong Popular Culture” with effect from Semester Two, AY 2018/19.  Students who have taken the module “Cantonese in Hong Kong Popular Culture” before Semester Two, AY 2018/19 are not allowed to take the module “Cantonese Linguistics in Hong Kong Popular Culture” to fulfil the graduation requirement.

 

  1. Students of Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Public Relations and Management/Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Public Relations and International Events Management who take MPM4200 Public Speaking as programme core/elective are not allowed to take GEE5213 The Art of Professional Speaking to fulfil the graduation requirement.

 

  1. Students of Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Culinary Arts and Management are allowed to take GEE5102 Impact of Contemporary Design on Society to fulfil the graduation requirement with effect from the Year-1 and Year-3 entry cohorts of AY 2018/19.  The students admitted before the above cohorts are not allowed to take this module to fulfil the graduation requirement.

 

  1. Students of Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Public Relations and Management/Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Public Relations and International Events Management who take MPM5406 Translation for Public Relations as programme elective are not allowed to take GEE5407 Translation in Everyday Life (English-Chinese) to fulfil the graduation requirement.  This requirement also takes effect retrospectively to the cohorts of AY 2015/16 to AY 2019/20.

 

  1. Students of Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Horticulture, Arboriculture and Landscape Management are not allowed to take GEE5106 Tree Safety Inspection & Climbing to fulfil the graduation requirement with effect from the Year-1 and Year-3 entry cohorts of AY 2020/21.  The students of Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Horticulture and Landscape Management admitted before the Year-1 and Year-3 entry cohorts of AY 2020/21 are allowed to take this module to fulfil the graduation requirement.

   

  1. Students of Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Product Design are not allowed to take GEE5107 Land Art to fulfil the graduation requirement with effect from Semester Two, AY 2020/21.

 

  1. Students of Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Advertising are not allowed to take GEE5107 Land Art to fulfil the graduation requirement with effect from Semester One, AY 2021/22.

 

  1. GEE5426 Entrepreneurship in Action is designed for students admitted via Year-3 entry. Students who take GEC4306 Entrepreneurial Mindset are not allowed to take GEE5426 Entrepreneurship in Action to fulfil the graduation requirement.  This requirement also takes effect retrospectively to the cohorts of all THEi programmes starting from AY 2012/13.

 

  1. Year 3 and Year 4 students of Recreation Management/Sports Management specialisation of Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours) in Sports and Recreation Management Programme who take MCC5323 Entrepreneurship are not allowed to take GEE5426 Entrepreneurship in Action to fulfil the graduation requirement.  This requirement also takes effect retrospectively to the cohorts of AY 2012/13 to AY 2020/21.

 

  1. Students of Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Public Relations and Management/Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Public Relations and International Events Management who take MCC5323 Entrepreneurship as programme elective are not allowed to take GEE5426 Entrepreneurship in Action to fulfil the graduation requirement.  This requirement also takes effect retrospectively to the cohorts of AY 2015/16 to AY 2020/21.
  2. GEE5427 Technology & the Future of Work is designed for students admitted via Year-3 entry.  Students who take GEC4305 A.I. and Blockchain in Society & Work# are not allowed to take GEE5427 Technology & the Future of Work to fulfil the graduation requirement.  This requirement also takes effect retrospectively to the cohorts of all THEi programmes starting from AY 2012/13.

 

  1. GEE5109 has been renamed from “Toy Design” to “Design for Fun” with effect from Semester One, AY 2022/23.  Students who have taken the module “Toy Design” before Semester One, AY 2022/23 are not allowed to take the module “Design for Fun” to fulfil the graduation requirement.

 

  1. Students of Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Building Services Engineering  are not allowed to take GEE5323 Indoor Environment Engineering to fulfil the graduation requirement with effect from Semester Two, AY 2022/23.

 

  1. Students of Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Civil Engineering are not allowed to take GEE5324 Environment Engineering to fulfil the graduation requirement with effect from Semester Two, AY 2022/23.

 

  1. Students of Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Food Science and Safety are not allowed to take GEE5325 Advanced Topics in Food Science to fulfil the graduation requirement with effect from Semester Two, AY 2022/23.

 

  1. Students of Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Testing and Certification are not allowed to take GEE5326 Gemological Science to fulfil the graduation requirement with effect from Semester Two, AY 2022/23.

 

  1. Students of Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Chinese Medicinal Pharmacy are not allowed to take GEE5327 Processing of Chinese Materia Medica to fulfil the graduation requirement with effect from Semester Two, AY 2022/23.

 

  1. Students of Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Nutrition and Healthcare Management are not allowed to take “GEE5328 Primary Health Care & Health Promotion” to fulfil the graduation requirement with effect from Semester Two, AY 2022/23.

 

  1. GEE5428 從語言到生活:認識香港粵語與文化 From Language to Daily Life: Understanding Hong Kong Cantonese & Culture offered by SGEL is designed for students who are studying in Hong Kong with Putonghua (Mandarin/Chinese) as mother tongue.

 

# GEC4305 has been renamed from “Technology, Society & Work” to “A.I. and Blockchain in Society & Work” effective from Semester One, AY2024/25
