PROGRAMME FEATURES
The Master of Science in Urban Forestry programme at THEi is a pioneering programme, designed to address societal challenges in sustainable urban forestry through training competent, resourceful and ethical professionals with a creative and strategic outlook. As an international city and the gateway to the Greater Bay Area (GBA), Hong Kong requires forward-thinking urban foresters well-versed in applying cutting-edge technologies within the local context to deliver a high-quality living environment in the city. This in turn elevates the quality of urban green spaces, enrichs the structure and composition of urban greenery, enhances the quality and the quantity of ecosystem services, and expands the adoption of nature-based solutions. The Programme capitalises on the strong collaboration with the greening industry and official bodies in Hong Kong, ensuring that graduates are conversant with the industrial demands in Hong Kong and the GBA.
This Master’s Degree Programme connects professional competencies and technical expertise to their practical applications for the career advancement of graduates. Its distinctiveness is marked by the robust and strong partnership with the greening industry in the curriculum, uniting theory and professional practice to deepen employability and future readiness. The Programme includes a Capstone Applied Project, through which students investigate authentic real-life scenarios from the greening industry, empowering them by implementing acquired knowledge and expertise in response to the needs in the industry and the community, and sharpening their problem-solving capabilities in the workplace so that they can contribute to Hong Kong and the GBA.
Programme Aims
This Programme aims to cultivate a new generation of professionals capable of designing, establishing, monitoring, restoring and enhancing urban forests in Hong Kong and beyond. By integrating these elements into the curriculum, graduates will be well prepared to navigate the complexities and demands of the rapidly evolving greening industry. Specifically, the Programme Objectives are to develop the following competences in students:
- Develop students’ proficiency in the quantitative analysis of the dynamics of urban ecosystems and the application of major principles and policies in urban ecology in order to enhance sustainability and climate resilience in various urban environments;
- Nurture students’ abilities to design and implement effective nature-based solutions, technological applications and urban planning strategies, promoting the integration of urban green infrastructure into urban settings and encouraging ecological features and the cultural characteristics of urban communities;
- Equip students with knowledge of the ecological and cultural conservation techniques to preserve and enhance the cultural significance of urban landscapes, and to promote the responsible stewardship of natural heritage across various urban environments; and
- Cultivate students’ entrepreneurial leadership skills in addition to management skills, empowering them to drive innovative and sustainable solutions which blend technological application, business viability, urban forestry, and community engagement.
CAREER PROSPECTS
Graduates from this Master’s Degree Programme can pursue careers in fields related to urban forestry from environmental management to sustainability-related professions, developing their careers in the Greater Bay Area (GBA) and beyond. PROGRAMME-SPECIFIC ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
- A bachelor’s degree from a recognised institution in related fields like Forestry, Ecology, Biology, Horticulture, Agriculture, Arboriculture, Landscape Management, Geography, Landscape Studies, Environmental Management, Turfgrass Science, Landscape Architecture, and Environmental Science (or equivalent); or
- A bachelor’s degree from a recognised institution with at least 3 years of supervisory/ managerial working experience; and
- Language Requirement (Putonghua)
(i) Mother tongue/ language is Putonghua; or
(ii) Received a bachelor’s degree or above of which the MOI was Putonghua; or
(iii) Have at least three years working experience in Chinese Mainland or other Putonghua speaking countries or regions; or
(iv) Have achieved at least Grade B, Level 3 in the Putonghua Shuiping Ceshi awarded by the State Language Commission (SLC); or
(v) Demonstrate the Putonghua speaking competence through assessments in an interview.
Applicants who acquire a bachelor’s degree from a recognised institution with at least 3 years of supervisory/ managerial working experience are required to submit a personal statement (in Chinese) regarding their reasons of applying for the Programme, expectation and a future plan of their study, together with a set of Curriculum Vitae (CV) and reference letter(s) from their current and/or previous employers to verify the required amount and nature of working experience. Shortlisted applicants are required to attend an interview to assess their suitability.
TUITION FEE
- The tuition fees are charged according to the number of Institute Credit Points taken during a semester.
- The tuition fee for academic year 2026/27 is $9,000 per Institute Credit Point. Tuition fees are subject to an annual review.
