The Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong (THEi) welcomes the initiatives to accelerate the development of the Northern Metropolis University Town, promote the “Study in Hong Kong” brand, and advance applied science education, promulgated in the Chief Executive’s “Hong Kong’s First Five-Year Plan” and the newly released “Policy Address.”
Aligning with 15th Five-Year Plan to Support Northern Metropolis University Town
THEi is currently in the process of transitioning into a University of Applied Sciences. In view of the Northern Metropolis University Town blueprint accelerating into full-scale implementation, THEi will propel Hong Kong’s tech growth across four key areas: deepening industry-academia-research-application and employment integration, supplying talent and technology, deploying cutting-edge technologies, and boosting surrounding industries to realise the “industry-city integration” vision.
Advancing the “Dual Carbon” Goals: Translating Applied Research Outcomes to Build a Smart City
To align with the national “Dual Carbon” goals and realise Hong Kong’s vision of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, THEi, with the support of the Environment and Ecology Bureau, is actively driving a green and low-carbon transition. THEi’s research team has collaborated with a Chinese Mainland enterprise to develop and launch the mobile EV charging robot POWERMAN, specifically designed to address key pain points of EV charging. This innovation provides flexible and highly efficient fast-charging services for private cars, taxis, minibuses, and buses—optimising the EV charging network and accelerating Hong Kong’s transformation into a smart city.
Drive Internationalisation
As an associate member of the Alliance of Universities of Applied Sciences, THEi has actively expanded its footprint in the Greater Bay Area and “Belt and Road” countries and regions. We are dedicated to telling the good stories of the “Study in Hong Kong” brand by promoting the applied science education and bringing in diverse and high-quality global students, facilitating Hong Kong to become an international hub for high-calibre talents.
Professor Alan LAU Kin-tak, President of THEi, stated that the Northern Metropolis is an innovation-driven industrial base brimming with opportunities. Leveraging on this momentum, the Institute will actively implement an ecosystem of “industry-academia-research-application-employment” to pioneer cutting-edge scientific research. Taking POWERMAN as an example, he emphasised that this project successfully demonstrates the translation of THEi’s research outcomes into practical applications, thereby accelerating Hong Kong’s journey toward becoming an international innovation and technology centre.
Furthermore, Professor LAU expressed his gratitude once again to the HKSAR Government for inviting THEi to design the team badges, ties, and scarves for the Chief Executive and his team for “Hong Kong’s First Five-Year Plan” and the newly released “Policy Address”. He pointed out that this project enables students to transform their concepts into tangible creations, cultivating talents with work-ready capabilities. He believes that such industry-academia collaborative experiences will become deeply rooted in the future Northern Metropolis University Town. THEi will continue to leverage its strengths in applied sciences to nurture professionals at the industry forefront, joining forces to elevate the “Study in Hong Kong” brand.
