Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Product Design

Programme Information

The BA(Hons) Product Design Programme encourages students to take an ‘interdisciplinary’ approach to product design. That means you will study with other design and technology students on common projects. The Programme also offers internships and live industry projects which allows a student to experience real work for a company while studying. You will design for the latest design challenges faced by real employers. Industry partners award sponsored prizes to students who demonstrate excellent design work. Our Programme builds graduates who are lifelong learners and valued design professionals with a consistently high graduate employment rate. We offer DSE graduates SSSDP study places and higher diploma graduates a rich and industry connected top-up degree.

Out-of-Class Learning

London Art and Design Trip 2018

A group of nine product design students from Year 3 and 4 took part in a 12-day study trip to London, UK from the end of June to early July. They took part in a 4-day workshop organized with our UK partner De Montfort University. While at De Montfort University, our students were introduced to the practice of digital design in a European context and offered opportunities to visit New Designers Show 2018.

Student Achievements

Design Awards and Outstanding Achievement

Apart from fabulous harvest from Hong Kong Smart Design Award, THEi Product Design students achieved several outstand design award in AY1819, including Gold and Bronze award of 2018 Solidworks Design Contest and the Innovation Award of the 2nd Greater China Smart Home Appliances Design Competition. Outstanding Showcases

Indoor Hydroponic Wall Planter

More people are taking planting as their hobby. This design aims to link the relationship between humans and nature. In a highly urban context such as cities and high rises, the design student wants to enhance users’ experiences in planting houseplants. She developed a design solution that minimizes hassles of planting. The resultant design addresses usability combined with a highly stylish form factor that is easy to use and maintain, bring a newfound joy to urban gardeners.

Sustainable Lighting Design 2021

In this project students are taught sustainable product design using the Cradle-to-Cradle concept which is a biomimetic method to the design of products and systems. It models human industry on nature’s processes where materials are considered as nutrients circulating in healthy, safe metabolisms. Students are tasked to design and fabricate a sustainable lighting design incorporating the concept taught in the module. The project was done in collaboration with the Hong Kong Printing and Publishing Media Industry Workers Union who provided to students some of the sustainable materials used to make the design and access for further extending their knowledge about green technology.

Merus Menstruation Kit

Around the world, there are 200,000 tonnes of menstrual waste produced per year. Problems with current menstruation products include difficult insertion, inconvenient disinfection, and inconvenience when it comes to menstrual tracking. This design aims to give a sense of intimacy & cleanliness to menstruation products, provide a portable & convenient method of disinfection and simplify and aid product insertion for beginners. By promoting green menstrual management, an app not only allows online purchase and reorder of consumable items, but it also helps manage and track menstruation cycles. The UV sterilizer helps to provide a ‘greener’ management of items reducing overall consumable items used.

Cat’s lovely home

Cat lovers spend their time pampering their pets. This cat product design addresses pain points for cat owners such as lack of safe ‘high-up’ places where cats love to sit and observe, unattractive materials used for common cat products, not having products that fit well into a stylish home and relatively difficulty to customize cat products for homes. With this product, owners can configure the different items according to the layout of their homes. Cats will love you for your attention to detail and the fabric parts can be washed easily to maintain cat hygiene.

Bird on a Wire

This beautiful sculptural bird was created using waste printed parchments from the printing industry. The choice of materials allows the warm light of the L.E.D. bulb to shine through. The collaboration with commercial printers taught students that waste materials can be revived when combined with creativity and design skill.

Grab & Stack Boardgame

Educational toys are important in children’s growth and development. Inventions of digital toys are harming the parent-child relationship. Designing a traditional toy that doesn’t rely much on technology can still be popular among children around the world. Parents think a good toy should be challenging and encouraging, open to flexible play patterns, can keep the long-term interest of children, and can involve parents during play for developing a better parent-child relationships. Grab & Stack is a race against your opponents to stack burgers, sandwiches, and hotdogs correctly in the shortest amount of time! You must pick up the ingredients with the suction stick, not your hands!

The Pivot Wheelchair

Wheelchairs are limited when it comes to getting through terrains such as sand, grassland, or rough footpaths. It limits users’ outdoor activity. These limitations can also be found in built environments. For example, excessive slopes, stairs, garden features and alike. Wheelchair users often feel exhausted after travelling short distances outdoors when they encounter the features. To achieve a better user experience, several enhancements have been made in this new design. The seating angle has been adjusted to give better pelvic support for extended usage, easing the pressure on the buttocks. This design now has a fifth wheel that is power assisted. This lightweight design allows powered drivetrain while maintaining light overall weight. It has a rimless design and a convenient horizontal handlebar. Storage and folding are achieved easily.

Project Leviathan

Project Leviathan is a modern sailing yacht concept designed to provide the best sailing experience for sailors, letting them travel around the world without boundaries. It aims to provide easy sailing and the betterment of life living on-board the yacht. The Leviathan is a 20-meter cruiser type sailing yacht with an integrated jet tender. Designed with the mind set of sustainability and self-sufficiency, the yacht is infused with numerous innovative design solutions. It is the combination of modern technologies and stunning aesthetics that aims to revolutionize the luxury superyacht market.

Veggyhouse

This design is the result of a collaboration between product design and information and communication technology students in a semester long project. They were tasked with improving the overall user experience of indoor planting and using technology to monitor, inform, simplify, and support daily planting rituals. Users can benefit from use of electronic features that automate watering and gives status updates to the user’s phone at any time. The smart product gives the correct wavelengths of light to the plant so that the least amount of electricity is used to support its growth. Overall, the simple and attractive shape also has ease of use and cleaning in mind.
