JUPAS 2025 Applications Exceed 10,000; Sports and Recreation Programmes Rank Highest

The Joint University Programmes Admissions System (JUPAS) election has concluded. The Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong (THEi) is currently transitioning to a “University of Applied Sciences.” This development, together with the increasing demand for applied talents in society, has led to a significant rise in JUPAS applicants, with the Institute receiving over 10,000 applications. Significantly, more than 30% of applicants have selected programmes from the Department of Sport and Recreation as one of their top three choices in Band A, establishing it as the most popular department.

The Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours) in Sports Coaching at THEi sees the strongest competition, with approximately 22 applicants vying for one position. Meanwhile, the Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours) in Sports and Recreation Management has 13 applicants competing for one place. Fuelled by the excitement of major sports events and the industry’s need for sports professionals, the Institute is continually improving its teaching facilities and resources. This effort includes the approval of the accreditation for the “Sport and Recreation Management” programme area in February, which is a significant step towards becoming a “University of Applied Sciences.” Additionally, the Institute has established a Functional Training and Injury Prevention Centre and has introduced several advanced technologies to enhance the programme quality and students’ practical experience.

Subsidies Up to HKD35,120 for Eligible Students

In addition to the “Study Subsidy Scheme for Designated Professions/ Sectors” programmes, THEi offers 10 self-financing bachelor’s degree programmes that are “applied science-oriented.” These programmes cover academic areas such as Chinese medicine and food science, digital construction and building services, hotel management and culinary arts and technology, and digital technology and innovative business. They enable students to integrate applied technology with practical skills, ensuring 100% work-integrated learning and engaging students in learning the latest industry technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI) applications and knowledge. These self-financing programmes are part of the “Non-means-tested Subsidy Scheme for Self-financing Undergraduate Studies in Hong Kong (NMTSS),” allowing eligible students to receive a subsidy of up to HKD35,120 per year (for the 2025/26 academic year).
