THEi Launches “Hydrogen Energy Education and Talent Development Centre”, Funded by the Environment and Conservation Fund

The Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong (THEi) has been actively responding to the hydrogen development strategies of the nation and the HKSAR Government. The Institute held the “Hydrogen Energy Education and Talent Development Centre Grand Opening Ceremony cum Hydrogen Forum” on 26 September. The project and opening Ceremony have received funding of $1,973,850 from the Environment and Conservation Fund (the ECF), with a funding period of 12 months. The Centre is dedicated to enhancing public awareness and understanding of hydrogen energy while cultivating a new generation of green technology professionals. It also aims to foster collaboration between educational institutions and businesses in the hydrogen sector to collectively create a low-carbon city.

The event was officiated by Dr Eric CHENG Kam-chung, Chairman of the Environment and Conservation Fund Committee, and Dr Ming GE, Commissioner for Industry (Innovation and Technology) of the Innovation, Technology and Industry Bureau. Funded by the ECF, the Centre will be open to the public starting from 26 September. Groups can make appointments for guided tours and workshops.

Five Hydrogen Energy Exhibition Zones Showcase Industry Technologies in Response to 2025 Policy Address

The 2025 Policy Address highlighted that Hong Kong is striving to attain carbon neutrality by 2050 to align with the national “dual carbon” goals, emphasising the vital role of the new energy sector in this effort. As a low-carbon energy source with significant development potential, hydrogen energy is regarded as an important component of future energy strategies.

To align with this policy direction, the new Centre, funded by the ECF, consists of five exhibition items. Through displays of hydrogen technology products and interactive games, visitors can explore various hydrogen production methods, technologies, and processes. The Centre is supported by several industry partners, including Sinosynergy, Shanghai KENSINO Technology, Sinopec HK, and Citybus, to collectively promote the popularisation and application of hydrogen energy technology.

Prof Alan LAU Kin-tak, President of THEi, expressed his gratitude to the Environment and Conservation Fund for funding this project. He hopes the Centre will become a beacon of knowledge, aligning with the Government’s “Strategy of Hydrogen Development in Hong Kong.” By fostering collaboration among the Government, industry, academia, and research sectors, he aims to establish a hydrogen energy ecosystem and advance the goal of achieving carbon neutrality in Hong Kong by 2025.

Dr Eric CHENG Kam-chung, Chairman, Environment and Conservation Fund Committee, emphasised the profound significance of the Centre’s inauguration in his opening speech. As the first hydrogen energy education centre in the region, it aims to advance hydrogen development by utilising state-of-the-art educational facilities and organising a series of seminars to thoroughly inform the public about hydrogen energy and its practical uses. This project is believed to align with the ECF’s objectives, raising public awareness about actively engaging in green living and collectively striving toward environmental sustainability in Hong Kong.

Ir Dr Hon LO Wai-kwok, GBS, MH, JP, Legislative Council Member, discussed the overall planning blueprint and key initiatives for hydrogen development under the theme “A New Era of Hydrogen Energy: Opportunities and Challenges for Hong Kong.” He is confident that Hong Kong, with its unique advantages in promoting a dual-circulation economy, can attract high-quality hydrogen industries and enterprises to establish themselves in the region. He hopes for collaborative efforts among government, business, and educational institutions to continue advocating for and advancing the hydrogen economy, creating a bright and green future for society.

Hon Sunny TAN, Legislative Council Member and Chairman of the Hong Kong Productivity Council, extended his congratulations on the Centre’s opening during his online speech. He regarded this as a significant step forward in promoting the development of the hydrogen industry in Hong Kong. He also expressed his desire for future collaboration with THEi to drive innovation and the application of hydrogen technology, nurturing more young talent and injecting new momentum into the green future of both the nation and Hong Kong.

Two Keynote Speeches Focused on Global Innovation Opportunities in Hydrogen Energy

During the Hydrogen forum held on the same day, THEi invited Dr XIONG Yun, President of Shanghai Zhi Chu Yun Jia Hydrogen Energy Technology Company Limited, and Mr Gordon CHAKAODZA, Director of the Hydrogen Hub in Victoria, Australia, to deliver keynote speeches on the latest developments and international trends in hydrogen energy research and innovation, aiming to enhance public understanding of hydrogen energy applications.
