Programme Aims

In recent years, a strong demand for sports and recreation professionals has been constituted by the rapid development of the sports and recreation industry in Hong Kong. This programme aims to provide students with a rigorous and intellectual programme of study; especially for those who wish to pursue or further advance their careers in the core areas of sports therapy, or sports management. Through high-quality education and training; this programme not only emphasises the importance of theoretical knowledge, but also the development of students’ practical and professional skills through gaining work experiences in the industry, which is undertaken during Year 3 and Year 4. Students are expected to be professionally and/or clinically competent in their disciplines upon their graduation.  Students will specialise in one of the following two specialisations: (1) sports therapy, or (2) sports management.

Professional Recognition

The Sports Therapy specialisation of this programme is accredited by The Society of Sports Therapists, UK.

This programme is officially affiliated with the British Weight Lifting.

Specific Requirements

For Year 1 Entry:

  1. For HKDSE, a maximum of two Applied Learning (ApL) subjects can be counted for admission purpose.  Relevant ApL subjects include: Sports Coaching and Management, Hospitality Services in Practice, Health Care Practice, Exercise Science and Health Fitness, Events Planning and Operation, Fundamental Health Care, Exercise and Fitness Coaching / Sports and Fitness Coaching, Rehabilitation Care Practice and eSports Technology / eSports Technology and Management.
  2. For the HKDSE “Physical Education (PE)” subject, the subject score with weighting x 2.0 will be used in the calculation of admission score.
  3. Applicants may be required to attend an interview.

Programme-specific Scholarships

(I) Hong Kong China Rugby Scholarship

The Hong Kong China Rugby (HKCR) Charitable Trust Fund was set up to provide financial assistance to those committed rugby players who have satisfactory scholastic achievements with needs for financial support. The Scholarships will be awarded at the discretion of the Hong Kong China Rugby (HKCR) Charitable Trust Fund Committee. Incentive Award has established to reward applicant with outstanding performance.

(II) Elite Athletes Charitable Trust Scholarships

The Hong Kong Elite Athletes Association (HKEAA) with its aims to promoting sports, has offered scholarship to those who are keen to take part in sports or work for the industry.

Cricket Hong Kong Scholarship aims to recognize and award SRM students who have actively participated in Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) with Cricket Hong Kong.

Programme Curriculum

This is a credit-based programme, which students will normally complete over 4 years (in 8 semesters). Students are required to take 132 credit points with modules as shown below and an Industrial Attachment module for work-integrated learning.

To encourage lifelong learning in general, and to provide students with greater flexibility, the programme will be offered through a credit-based module accumulation system with a multi-entry and multi-exit structure.

Sports Therapy

This specialisation prepares students to prevent, recognise and evaluate, manage, treat and when appropriate refer onwards for various sports and exercise related injuries. Students will also learn how to design and evaluate training programmes for rehabilitation purposes.

As professionals in sports therapy, graduates are expected to solve problems that arise during the process of rehabilitation, and to understand the education and professional practice issues in the sports therapy area. This specialisation is accredited by The Society of Sports Therapists (UK) and offers the eligibility for full membership of the Society, at the appropriate fee, on successful completion and award of the BSocSc (Honours) Sport and Recreation Management (Sports Therapy).

Sports Management

This specialisation prepares students to suggest feasible solutions to solve problems that arise in the recreation and leisure workplace. Students will learn how to perform supervisory and managerial duties in recreation and leisure management.

They are also expected to communicate effectively and professionally with relevant stakeholders.

Work-integrated Learning (WIL) modules, which are directed industry attachments that provide powerful learning experiences by integrating theoretical learning with its application in the workplace. Students are required to complete 250 hours of Work-integrated Learning to be eligible for the award of Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours) in Sports and Recreation Management.
