General Entrance Requirements 

Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSE) Qualifications 

  • Level 3 or above in the HKDSE English Language and Chinese Language; AND 

  • Level 2 or above in the HKDSE Mathematics and one Elective Subject; AND

  • An "Attained" in Citizenship and Social Development; OR Equivalent.  

 

Notes: 

  1. The study duration of Degree programmes is normally 4 years.

  2. An “Attained”, “Attained with Distinction(I)” and “Attained with Distinction(II)” in an HKDSE relevant Applied Learning (ApL) subject (Category B subjects) are regarded as equivalent to an HKDSE subject at “Level 2” , “Level 3” and “Level 4” respectively, and a maximum of two ApL subjects (excluding ApL(C)) can be counted for admission purpose. Relevant ApL subjects of individual programme are listed in the Programme Information.
  3. Starting from the 2025 HKDSE, five Other Language subjects will be offered under Category C, including French, German, Japanese, Korean and Spanish.  A maximum of one Other Language subject will be considered in the admission selection process. The admission score conversion will be announced shortly on THEi’s website.  For the 2024 HKDSE or earlier, a "Grade D or E" and a "Grade C or above" in an HKDSE Other Language subject (Category C subjects) are considered equivalent to an HKDSE subject at "Level 2" and "Level 3" respectively.  In such cases, one Other Language subject can be counted for admission purposes.

  4. An “Attained” in Citizenship and Social Development will be counted as “Level 2” of one Elective Subject in the admission score calculation.

  5. Some programmes may have other specific entrance requirements. Please refer to the entrance requirements of individual programmes for details.

  6. Offering of study place is subject to the applicants’ academic qualifications, interview / test performance (if applicable), other learning experience and achievements, and availability of study places.

 

Important Notes: 

  • Applicants can apply with the results of the same public examination in different years of award.  The best grade of multiple attempts on a particular subject will be assessed for admission.

  • Public examination results under the old and new academic structures will not normally be considered in combination in the assessment for admission.

Alternative Language Qualifications

Alternative Chinese Language Qualifications (For Non-Chinese Speaking Applicants Only) 

If non-Chinese speaking applicants meet the following specific circumstances, the alternative language results (see table below) will be considered individually in the application. 

 

The specific circumstances are :

  • The applicant has learnt Chinese Language for less than six years while receiving primary and secondary education. This caters specifically to applicants who have a late start in the learning of Chinese Language (e.g. due to their settlement in Hong Kong well past the entry level) or who have been educated in Hong Kong sporadically; OR
  • The applicant has learnt Chinese Language for six years or more in schools, but has been taught an adapted and simpler Chinese Language curriculum not normally applicable to the majority of students in the local schools.

Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (HKALE) Qualifications

Holders of Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (HKALE) and Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE) qualifications may apply for admission to Degree programmes. 

 

  • Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (HKALE)
    Grade E or above in the following subjects:
    • AS-Level subject: Use of English; and
    • AS-Level subject: Chinese Language & Culture1 ; and
    • One other A-Level subject or two other AS-Level subjects; AND 
  • Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE)
    • Five subjects at Grade E / Level 2 or above, including English Language2 and Chinese Language; OR Equivalent

 

Notes:

1. If applicants do not have the required HKALE Chinese Language & Culture qualification, the following language results will be considered in the application for Degree programmes:

- Grade E or above in HKALE Chinese Literature; OR

- Grade D or above in an HKCEE language subject other than Chinese Language and English Language.

2. Applicants who took HKCEE English Language in 2006 or before should have attained Grade E or above (Syllabus B) / Grade C or above (Syllabus A).

3. Some programmes may have other specific requirements. Please refer to the section of Specific Entrance Requirements of Individual Programme.

4. The study duration of Degree programmes is normally 4 years.

5. Applicants may be required to attend an interview which is conducted in English.

6. Offering of study place is subject to the applicants’ academic qualifications, interview / test performance (if applicable) and availability of study places.

International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Qualifications

  • Holder of an International Baccalaureate Diploma; and
  • One of the following English Language results: 
    • Grade E in GCE (A-Level / AS-Level) English Language; or
    • Grade C / Grade 4 in GCSE / IGCSE / GCE (O-Level) English Language; or
    • Grade E in HKALE (AS-Level) Use of English; or
    • A score of 100 out of a maximum of 150 for the English Language subject of NCEE or equivalent; or
    • An overall score of 5.5 in IELTS; or
    • A score of 79 or (Internet-based test) or 213 (Computer-based test) or 550 (Paper-based test) in Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL); or
    • Grade 4 or above in IB Higher-Level English Language (Syllabus B) / Grade 4 in Standard-/Higher-Level English Language (Syllabus A) / Language and Literature (Syllabus A) / Literature (Syllabus A) / Grade 4 or above in Standard-Level English Literature and Performance / Grade 5 or above in Standard-Level English Language (Syllabus B); or
    • Have obtained an equivalent qualification to HKDSE's English Language Level 3

Business and Technology Education Council (BTEC) Qualifications 

  • Holder of a BTEC Level 3 Diploma of “MM” Grades or a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma of “MPP” Grade*; and
  • One of the following English Language results: 
    • Grade E in GCE (A-Level / AS-Level) English Language; or
    • Grade C / Grade 4 in GCSE / IGCSE / GCE (O-Level) English Language; or
    • Grade E in HKALE (AS-Level) Use of English; or
    • A score of 100 out of a maximum of 150 for the English Language subject of NCEE or equivalent; or
    • An overall score of 5.5 in IELTS; or
    • A score of 79 or (Internet-based test) or 213 (Computer-based test) or 550 (Paper-based test) in Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL); or
