Sports Media Communication and Public Relations students and Teaching Fellow, Dr. Liane Lee, visited the Sun Hung Kai Properties Hong Kong Cyclothon 2017 on 8 Oct to learn from the gurus on how a live event is being produced. Below is a reflective learning commentary made by Sports Media Communication and Public Relations Year 3 student, Ng Yan Kiu, Ivy:
The Sun Hung Kai Properties Hong Kong Cyclothon 2017 was held successfully with around 4,900 cyclists participating in. Although I was not one of the cyclists or the volunteers when the event kicked off, this nice industry experience offered me a good chance to learn from the person in charge of the event planning that day.
The person in charge that day showed the event venue to our students, and also explained the event highlights as well as details about how the organizer arranged the event properly. Compared with past events, this event was quite different. For example, changes were made on the cycling track. Talking to the event planning and management, the person in charge emphasized that it was very difficult for one person to handle all of the potential risks relating to the event. Excepting learning the event planning experience from the person in charge, we also noticed that all of the event volunteers and helpers were quite busy and nervous that day.
After getting involved into this industry activity, I feel so happy that the event is a big success, although different parties had to face so many challenges during the event. I hope I can become a member of them in the near future.
