Digital Badges Scheme
The objectives of the scheme:
To nurture future-ready and work-ready talents equipped with all-round competencies and attributes, THEi students have always been encouraged to participate in extra-curricular activities. The introduction of the Digital Badges scheme is an institutional initiative, which aims to create a centralised system to measure and recognise students’ achievement through extra-curricular activities. The scheme enables the student to have a comprehensive record of their learning and development, it is designed to streamline the process of enrolment, promotion, and recognition of the campus activities. It can encourage students to participate in activities that can broaden their overall exposure and interest.
How does the scheme work?
The scheme intends to measure and recognise students’ achievement with the 6 Digital Badges, each represents a competency or attribute regarding the 6 THEi’s graduate attributes. Students are encouraged to earn all 6 types of Digital Badges in the duration of their study as recognition for their participation in actively gaining exposure and learnings from a different area of interest.

For staff and activity organisers to include your extra-curricular activity into the scheme:
To participate in the scheme, staff/activity organisers from faculties, school, and operational units (Faculty/ School/ OUs) are encouraged to inform administrators from Learning Commons (LC) about the nature of the activity and the digital badge(s) intended to award by using MS forms. They can start the enrolment and promotion the activity through THEi [Mobile App] with the enrolment link attached. The staff/activity organisers can select the most important attribute(s) that the activity is intending to deliver (Refer to the credential guideline). After completing an activity, staff/activity organisers can recognise student’s participation through uploading attendance records to the [ MyPortal ] with the designated digital badge(s) appeared in the student’s record.

Students will receive one Digital Badge by participating in an activity that lasted no more than one day.
For activity which lasted for 2 days, 2 Digital Badges from 2 different attributes can be awarded. With the same principles, for activity which lasted for 3 days or more, 3 Digital Badges can be awarded for 3 different attributes.
Example 1. For a 1 day team building workshop, the student can earn one Digital Badge with the attribute of Effective communicator (EC)
Example 2. For a 2 days mental health first-aid course, the student can earn 2 Digital Badges with the attributes of 1.) Positive and flexible (PF) and 2.) Effective communicator (EF)
Example 3. For a 3 months exchange tour in Korea, the student can earn 3 Digital Badges with the attributes of 1.) Professionally, socially and globally responsible (PSG), 2.)Informed and professionally competent (IPC), 3.) Independent learner (IDL)
Descriptions of categories:
The respective 6 Digital Badges should be awarded based on the nature of the activity.
Informed and professionally competent (IPC) represents activities and programmes which enable participants to learn new knowledge and skills required in an industrial setting.
Independent learners (IDL) represent activities and programmes in which participants have to take initiative and discover knowledge and pick up on skills independently.
Problem-solvers (PS) represent activities and programmes which required participants to tackle an existing problem with critical and analytical thinking that can lead to creative solutions.
Effective communicators (EC) represents activities and programmes which participants have to demonstrate a high level of communication skills or learn to be an effective communicator in both written and verbal forms.
Professionally, socially and globally responsible (PSG) represents activities and programmes which enable participants to learn about pressing issues and ethical codes in the industry with social, economic, global implications.
Positive and flexible (PF) represents activities and programmes which enable participants to develop a positive mindset, to show empathy towards others, and to understand new concepts.
The Digital Badges Scheme intends to recognise students by providing them with a competency-based learning record that articulates their unique development. Students are encouraged to earn their Digital Badges by participating in extra-curricular activities during their studies. To promote whole-person development with all-round learnings and exposures, students are encouraged to enrol and complete at least 75% of the total duration of the activity. Under the scheme, the student can develop their portfolio which is comprised of all 6 types of Digital Badges. Student can review their status through [ MyPortal ] which indicates their participation records in the scheme. The scheme encouraged students to take ownership of their learning to ensure all-round learning is achieved during their studies. A designated webpage will be created for the scheme. Students have the option to publish their achievements on the official THEi website for their future reference. Only details such as the student’s name, programme, number and types of badges received will be displayed on the website.
For staff and activity organisers
As it is an institutional initiative to promote student participation in extra-curricular activities within the campus; staff/activity organisers are encouraged to organise activities as part of the Digital Badge Scheme with the following recommended steps:
1.) they can create the activity and inform the administrator from LC by completing the Activity Description Form [MS form], with details about the nature of the activity and the Digital Badge(s) intending to award. 2.) Staff/activity organisers can publish details of the activity with the enrolment link via THEi’s [Mobile App] to start the enrolment process 3.) Finally, the staff/activity organiser can upload students' attendance records with the digital badge awarded to the [Myportal] system within 3 weeks and submit the final attendance record to LC after the activity has been completed. students can then review their records through the systems.
Staff/activity organisers have the discretion to award the digital badges depending on their assessment of student’s participation and performance during the activity. In principle, if an activity has no assessment or reports to submit, students should complete at least 75% of the total duration of the activity to be considered as successfully completing the activity.
The 3 simple steps mentioned above are the recommended steps when organising an activity under the scheme. Principles of the scheme:
- The success of the scheme will rely on the support from staff and students with a clear understanding of the principles and guidelines of the scheme;
- Each activity, workshop, and seminars organised by staff should be able to deliver knowledge and skills for participants which are related to a set of competencies and attributes. Activity organisers can determine which attribute(s) the activity is intending to deliver according to the nature of the activities and subject matters related to the 6 THEi’ graduate attributes. LC administrator will monitor the implementation of the scheme and may advise organisers on their selection if necessary;
- Students can learn about the objectives of the activities and the attribute(s) that they can gain before deciding to enrol in activities that matched their learning goals and interest. Ultimately, the scheme should comprise activities with different attributes and natures. Students are encouraged to participate in activities that cover all 6 attributes during their study;
- To ensure participants who had successfully completed the activities can earn the Digital Badges they deserved, the scheme will rely on activity organisers to record the attendance at the end of the activity, so that the attendance can be accurately recorded and consolidated;
- The administrator and activities organiser should always respect student’s privacy and any personal data gathered in the scheme will be treated confidentially according to the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance. Students will have the option to share their achievements with the public for their reference after graduation. With the consent from the student, their names and course titles, and digital badges received will be published on the designated page on the website.
