Digital Badges Scheme

The objectives of the scheme:

To nurture future-ready and work-ready talents equipped with more diverse competencies and attributes, THEi students have always been encouraged to participate in extra-curricular activities that can broaden their overall exposure and interest. As an institutional initiative, the Digital Badges Scheme enables students to have a comprehensive record of their learning and development. It serves as a centralised system to record and recognise students’ achievements through their participation in extra-curricular activities.

How does the scheme work?

The scheme intends to recognise students’ achievement with the 6 Digital Badges, each represents a competency or attribute that relates to the 6 THEi’s graduate attributes. Students are encouraged to earn all 6 types of Digital Badges in the duration of their study as recognition for their active participation in gaining exposure and learnings from a different area of interest. The scheme enables students to review their records and publish their achievements for future reference.

For students to earn the Digital Badge:

Student to join

For students to participate in the Digital Badges Scheme, they can simply identify the activity they want to join and the type of digital badge(s) which will be awarded. To claim the digital badge(s) the student must attend and complete the activity to the satisfaction of the activity organiser. To review individual achievement and activity history, students can access the MyPortal with their CNA.

For staff to incorporate an extracurricular activity into the Digital Badges Scheme:

staff to join

THEi staff can participate in the Digital Badges Scheme by organising extracurricular activities such as industry talks, case competitions, workshops and seminars for the interest and development of students, the activity organisers from the Faculties, School, and OUs are encouraged to liaise with the learning advisors from Learning Commons (LC) before hosting the activity and advice can be shared on the administration of the scheme: 1.)Choosing the suitable Digital Badge(s) to award the student participants(Refer to the General principles on awarding the Digital Badge below) 2.)For the promotion and enrolment of the activity. The organiser can add the remarks into the promotional material by mentioning the type and number of Digital Badge(s) that participants will receive after completing the activity. 3.) After the completion of an activity, the Organiser can award students for their participation by uploading attendance records on [ MyPortal ]. (Activity Attendance Form in excel file can be downloaded below) 4.) Organiser should inform students about the update that students can review their Digital Badge records in their Activity History on the [ MyPortal ] platform. Students also have the option to publish their Digital Badge - Records of Achievement on the THEi website.

Benefit for students

In today’s business world, recruiters not only consider the academic achievement of a graduate candidate. They would also assess the personal attributes which a graduate possesses. The Digital Badges Scheme intends to recognise students by providing them with a competency-based learning record that articulates their unique development. Students are encouraged to earn their Digital Badges by participating in extra-curricular activities during their studies. Under the scheme, the student can develop a comprehensive learning portfolio that is comprised of all 6 types of Digital Badges. The scheme aims to enable students to take ownership of their learning to achieve holistic development during their studies. For future reference, students have the option to publish their Digital Badges Records of Achievement on the official THEi website.

Benefit for activity organiser

The Digital Badges Scheme is part of the THEi initiative for the student to enrich their overall learning experiences by actively participating in joining extracurricular activities and connecting with industry professionals as well as fellow students. In addition to the existing Non-Academic Transcript (NAT), the scheme serves as a centralised digital platform to recognise students’ learning achievement in a non-academic context, which could provide incentive for students to participate in extracurricular activities and get connected with their fellow tutors and students. Students can also develop a positive habit of taking ownership of their learning as well as taking initiative to broaden their social and industrial exposure.

Principles of the scheme:

  • Each activity, workshop, and seminar organised under the scheme should deliver knowledge and skills to participants which can be translated to the 6 THEi’s graduate attributes. Pending on the nature and the intended outcome of the activity, activity organisers can decide the type and number of Digital Badges that they are going to offer to their participants.  The learning advisor will monitor the implementation of the scheme and may advise organisers on their selection if necessary.
  • Students can learn about the objectives of the activity, the type and number of the Digital Badge(s) that they can earn before joining an activity. Students are encouraged to match their learning goals and interest with the activity they enrolled in. Ultimately, the scheme should comprise activities with different attributes and natures. Students are encouraged to participate in various types of activities that cover all 6 types of Digital Badges during their study.
  • To ensure participants of the activities can earn the Digital Badges they deserved, the scheme will rely on activity organisers to submit the attendance of students who had successfully completed the activity, so that the attendance can be accurately recorded, consolidated and uploaded to MyPortal in a timely manner. Activity organisers are advised to upload the attendance and submit a copy to the learning advisor within a month after the completion of the activity.
  • Staff and activities organisers should always respect students’ privacy and any personal data gathered in the scheme will be treated confidentially according to the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance.
  • Students will have the option to share their achievements on the THEi website (Digital Badges Scheme– Records of Achievement) for their reference after graduation. The activity organiser should seek consent from the student at the time of their enrolment and pass the information to the learning advisor for the update, Only the student’s names, course titles, year of entry and number of Digital Badges received will be published on the designated page on the THEi website.
